Authenticity
Format: This was an independent project within a class of ten students. The class spent the summer abroad in Rome at the University of Washington facility. The course started in Barcelona and ended in Berlin with numerous trips to various locations in Italy.
The assignment involved selecting individual sites and analyzing them at different scales through the lens of Heidegger and Deleuze. The design solution was determined by site specificity discovered thorough analysis. The material was required to be entirely hand produced.
The site I selected demonstrated history in a number of different ways.
The decision of the design was tied to the idea of authenticity. The site was adjacent, yet tucked away from history exploited and preserved. The pride of the originality of its streets and its founding was evidenced in conversations with everyone I encountered. The design response latched onto the authenticity of the place and attempted to expand it through variations of a master plan.
